Older hardware will (mechanically) break down over time and software support for older hardware will also eventually end, meaning that hardware assets will also be more vulnerable for security threats. While the hardware asset may not fully meet the requirements of the organization or end-user, it can still be leveraged effectively, providing value and benefits to the organization.
The proces and opportunities of ITAD.
There is an opportunity to extract value from these older assets through proper IT Asset Disposition practices. This involves not only disposing of the assets in a safe and environmentally friendly manner but also exploring avenues to maximize their residual value. Old IT hardware, such as workstations, laptops, servers, and other electronic devices, may contain valuable resources that can be reused. Maximizing the value of IT assets during the disposition process brings tangible benefits to the organization.
- It can help recover a portion of the initial investment, offset the costs associated with acquiring new assets, or even generate revenue streams through the resale of refurbished assets. In my experience, clients are often not aware of the actual value of (soon to be) decommissioned hardware and how they can leverage this hardware to support the organization one last time.
- Equipment that remains in good condition, functioning properly, or can be economically repaired and restored, will undergo repair and re-marketing processes by your ITAD provider. Subsequently, the cost of selling the asset is shared between you and your supplier, typically in a 70-30 split in your favor.
Data Security
In addition to maximizing the value of your IT assets, ensuring data security is a crucial component of IT Asset Disposition. In today’s digital landscape, it is paramount to prioritize the secure disposal of sensitive business information before equipment is discarded or reassigned. E.g., Storage mediums that are not thoroughly wiped can still contain ‘deleted’ sensitive data. Insufficient data security measures can result in data breaches, reputational harm, and legal ramifications. Consequently, incorporating data erasure and data carrier destruction as integral parts of your ITAD process is imperative.
